Facts of MPX Release Strategy
my hypothesis is as followed
Fact 2 - The MPX is low on memory and has been slated by every bulletin board from here to kingdom come. Enter a new operating system Microsoft Windows Mobile 2005 (code name Magneto). Currently, Pocket PCs use RAM for both storage and to hold currently running applications. With Magneto, RAM will only be used for running applications. Flash ROM is where all application and file storage will happen.
Fact 3 - Microsoft have had a competitor appear in the email market which they have had no defense against... namely Blackberry. Blackberry pushes emails onto a mobile device. Many business people carry such a device in addition to a cell phone. Magneto will solve this as it offers a push email client. Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 free upgrade will offer the server side solution which Blackberry already charge for. Now all Microsoft would need is a modern looking device with a QWERTY keyboard, pre loaded with Magneto. Any ideas. We'll come back to that one
Fact 4 - Microsoft don't release details of products in advance of their official release dates. If Magneto was going to be launched on a show product then the manufacturer would be gagged from releasing details.
Fact 5 - Sites have been 'requested' to remove screen shots of Magneto by Microsoft for showing screen shots of Magneto but the cat is out of the bag so to speak due to proxy servers. The code is ready to be frozen this month!
Fact 6 - MPX production has been brought in house from Taiwan allowing better quality control. (And better security re software!)
Fact 7 - The MPX220 is the first phone to have an official upgrade path to Magneto. Motorola have been working hand in hand with Microsoft on this one. Did I hear production was also brought in house with this one. Perhaps the rule is don't outsource something which Microsoft can sue you for if the confidentiality is broken.
Fact 8 - On the Motorola Website there is no reference to Windows mobile 2003 SE with respect to the MPX for the Western Market. Only Windows Mobile. Other Phones have the full operating system attributed to them.
So down to the nitty gritty.
When/where will the MPX/MPX300 Windows 2005 Push email client phone be unveiled. My guess is at a glitzy location by important people in the very near future.
Check the calendar and next month there is the MEDC 2005. Eh. Microsoft embedded developers conference.
Now for a quiz
1. Who will be Microsoft's representitive at this small developers conference.
2. Which Mobile phone Company is the Platinum Sponsor of the event.
3. Where is the event being held (Hint : Glitzy)
Blackberry - Watch out
Did I hear Nokia were buying them.. if all this is right then they have no choice really.
so Motorola MPX and Microsoft is a marriage made in heaven
and Nokia and Blackberry is the other marriage which may provide some decent competition.
Please do ctiticise this lot. Constructively of course
