Moto misses the mark... again!

No EDGE. Screwed up keyboard. Windows mobile. All deal killers.

When I first saw stories on this and saw the pics at my local Cingular store, I thought I finally found the perfect phone. Now I could consolidate my iPod, Nokia 6620, and Zaurus into a single device for work. But now, I think I'll just suffer with my 6620.

For a serious PDA/phone, it needs EDGE. Straight GPRS doesn't cut it. The keyboard does not look like it'd be easy to type on with it's messed up layout (why didn't they learn from the Nokia 3650?). And Windows Mobile is crap.

I was hoping they'd use Linux with iTunes/iPhoto support. And now with PalmSource's latest announcement, PalmOS 6 could run on top of such an OS.

And I wonder if Moto is going to pul...

FYI, I have an Audiovox. 🙂

Also, for someone who hasn't even used the phone yet, you sure are quick to jump all over it.

But then again, you use Linux and an iPod so I can't expect much from someone like that. 😁

Probably because anyone who uses these forums is free to express any opinion they want. If you don't like it, ignore it.

I manage the mobile tech section of a Fortune 500 company in Detroit. We've played with a pre-release version of this phone and I largely agree with the parent of this thread. Windows Mobile is far too unstable. We had to reboot the phone on the average of once per day. Unfortunately, you never knew when it'd go down, so the phone could've crashed and we wouldn't know for an hour or so when we'd go to check messages.

The keyboard layout looks goofy, but it's functional... although it'd been better if they had a keyboard layout that was more traditional... I really liked the keyboard on the Sony Clie UX-50 and wo...

I think you identified your own problem. You are working with / evaluating a pre-release version. If the all the problems were resolved don't you think they would have released it already? Give moto credit for trying to resolve as many issues as possible before releasing it.

How many Nokia phones running a pre-release os have you evaluated? Were they perfect?

Microsoft... a standard? M$ hardly adheres to industry standards... and even Windows Mobile 2003 is still far too unstable for everyday use.

The phones we've tried out running Symbian, Palm and even Linux were much better. Palm on Linux is a very enticing platform since Linux is easier to develop for than Palm, but you still have the familiar Palm PIM apps and 3rd party Palm apps available.

What's wrong with an iPod and a Mac? We trashed 90% of our Windows systems last year. Desktops run OS X and servers are running Novell/Suse. TCO has gone down 15% in year 1 and we anticipate close to 30% in year 2. And, we no longer spend time worrying about the next IE, MSSQL, or Windows bug. Our development group is also a lot more producti...
