Bluetooth data transfer to/from PC or Palm

I talked to Motorola software support this morning. Sorry if this is duplicate information...

The v710 currently does not support data transfer. There is no OPP - Object Push Profile - available on the handset. Motorola is releasing a software update for the v710 on 8/16, which will fix bugs related to BT headset and Acura/BMW car kit functionality. The rep told me that they are currently deciding whether to include OPP in the 8/16 software update. He told me to call back on 8/13, because at that point they'll know what the software update will include.

So, until then...no data transferring is possible between the v710, PC, and/or BT enabled Palm, or other PIM device...and even then it may never happen. I asked him what his gut f...

Don't you guys get it?

Its not Motorola! Its Verizon. they do not want you to be able to transfer anything without PAYING for it. Its the Verizon way of 'working for ya"

They do NOT have to allow BT to work the way it is supposed to because they get 1.2 million lemmings in a quarter and don't need to offer anything!

This is NOT a Motorola issue. I would guess they build to Carrier specs. The V600 and T637 have no 'crimps' in their BT function. PC sync and transfer of ringtones, pics are clean and fast either through IR or BT.BT is supposed to be OPEN ,not propietary.Cingular could have done the same and made those spend net dollars for pic transfer and ringtones, but alas being 2nd is good for their customers!

I think Verizo...

I dont agree with you on this one. Verizon offers another camera phone (i700 or treo) which allows pix and data transfer through USB cable....I asked a tech at verizon about this cutting there profit and they said its not an issue that VZW controls. The phone capabilities of transferring data through USB has nothing to do with VZW. How would they charge you for transferring data on an usb cable, this sounds as funny as VZW charging you to us BT. Just my opinion.

Besides i dont think motorola would have a problem saying that it was something VZW did not want to include.

I agree, you can trans pics and mp3 via the transflash card, so why would they mess with bt?

using the transflash to down load mp3's is just a way to get around the lack of bluetooth. right now, there is no other way to transfer data until, you guessed it!, "get it now" is available for the v710( which it will be). its all about puttin money in verizons pocket. if you cant see that then i feel sorry for you

Why then are there not BT/IR transfer issues with the V600, T637 and all other GSM based phones? Is CDMA that technologically difficult to implement with a fully functioning BT system? Motorola makes BT phons in their sleep!

Verizon wants you guys to use GIN for transfers, and if GIN is not available except for on the "other" map, well live and learn.

Its marketing. VErizon works for ya and all that.

Its not that they are trying to get you to use GIN, if they were then there would be issues with the Flashcard.

CAn you use that flash card on any notebook computer or PC? Is it a common flashcard? Is it as easy and convienient as BT?

Im asking here becasue I really do believe Motorola could have implemented BT in the same manner as they havs with the V600 and Sony with the T637. easy, and totally open. This is a Verizon call. I do not think the Motorola techs can offer up tht info, perhaps for contractual reasons,

Verizon claims they do not release the 'better ' phones becasue of "rigorous testing." Well they have rigorously tested this phone for a looooong time........go figure.

Me thinks the new Cingular will be sneeking up soon and give Big Red a little bop on the head.

Ofcourse you can, the E398 uses the same exact transflash card.

I ask because i have never seen transflash slots on PCs. Perhaps you have to buy a PCMIA card? Never heard of Transflash.

It it the same as the more common SD and Compact Flash or is it propietaary to this particular phone?

It is a new format. Currently, the only way to access it is through SD. When you buy a transflash card (for example, from buy.com), it comes with an SD to transflash adapter. This allows you to read the transflash card with an SD reader, just like a normal SD card.

See, I have a slight theory....

If it turns out that enough other devices are using OBEX functionality for things other than just "going around" Verizon's network, it may be acceptable for Verizon to give back some OBEX functionality.

I'm figuring that they can activate OBEX and file transfer and still prevent you from getting around GiN and other cash-cow products, depending on which cash-cow products are most sacred.

So the big point is, either way (no OBEX vs. limited OBEX) is going to create ill will and ...

Thanks for the update BToothman.

8/13 is passed my window to return the phone. As much as I would hate to give up on Verizon, I may move to Cingular to get the V600 if it will do what we want it to. I purchased this phone to work with my Acura (which it does) and my Palm T3. I looked at the V600 a week before picking up my V710 at RS. In my opinion, the V600 is not as nice of a phone as the V710. I would miss the V710 and the much better coverage of Verizon Wireless, but the heck with Verizon if they are limiting the phone so that people will be forced to use GIN.

So I ask the question... is Verizon limiting the phone in order to push people to use GIN? Or is this a mistake by Moto? If the V600 has OPP - Object Push Profile, ma...

The coverage of Verizon is not that much larger than Cingulars with the ATT deal. And the Cingular M2M and extended services netorwk is much much larger covering everywhere they have a signal.

Do a little homework . I don't think you will miss that Verizon Signal 'where the buffalo roam as much as the added features, lower cost and flexibility of Cingular.

BTW the T637 is a better phone IMO than the V600. I took the V600 back. The T637 can be used via BT and voice to change profiles and call or answer anyone without touching the phone. IR data tranfer between Palm or any IR device as well as complete total sync with Outlook as well as all the data transfer pics and ringtones you can handle. Phonebook has MULTIPLE phone numbers per N...

Good luck with the V600 since Cingular has a problem with the Motorola firmware/flash as well. The V600 has been discontinued by Cingular and they are replacing all V600 with V400's to fix the issue with 850Mhz problems. In September, a new V600 will be released.
