Motorola V220

Just wondering about the international phones being offered in EBay these days. They are advertised as 900/1800 or 900/1800/1900. My question is this, I want to use this model for travel to Asia. I do not want to contract with a US carrier. Can I just buy a sim card over there, stick it in and make calls without having to subscribe to a carrier?

I just want to make calls from Asia to USA. I don't need internet or SMS services, just phones calls.
