I have a Sidekick II right now. I'm planning on replacing it with a Motorola A630 due to size. I’ve read professional and user reviews on the Motorola phone, however, I haven’t seen any comments on instant messaging itself. I specifically use the SKII because of its “Always On” connection and handy keyboard. I mainly use the Email, SMS, and Instant Messaging services. It seems to me that the A630 has it all except the IM feature. Instant Messaging on the SKII is “live” meaning, it’s not text message based. If I send an IM message to a buddy on his computer, he receives the message right away. And is he responds, I receive the message right away. Based on my previous experiences with other phones, if I attempted to send an Instant Message t...

I have a Motorola A630 on T-Mobile. As far as T-Mobile goes, the instant messages are text based as every IM I send or recieve is deducted from my monthly text message count.

Otherwise, I keep AIM on all the time in my phone so that others can instant message me whenever they want. I get 1000 free texts a month, but that can go very fast if you use AIM on a daily basis.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll head over to T-Mobile and take a look at the A630 today. Live instant Messaging is a nice feature to have, but if the other features on the phone make up for it, I think I'll still get the A630 anyway.

I was told by tmobile rep that texting is included under the tzones plan. I specifically asked her this question, and she assured me that it was not text based?
Was she wrong ?

I have cingular with AIM on my phone, I have been consistenly told that Instant msging works off the SMS platform. When I use my AIM the msgs always come off my 750msg pkg.....maybe Tmobile has a different policy?

It is my understanding that the A630 has a built-in IM client so as long as you purchase internet access, why would it use SMS?

It does have an integrated IM as my v220 and the f9100 do but it's set up to use via sms. I believe *i stress believe* that it could be configured to use GPRS but I'm not sure how that would be done. If it would have to be on the Cingular side or on the phone side. I do know I utilize the Web version of Yahoo! Messenger (not an integrated or downloaded program) and it goes over GPRS. Unfortunately you have to actually push for the messages. They don't just pop up. I think that is why they utilize the sms because your phone will notify you that there is a new message. I'm not sure a GPRS version would do this...It would be nice for those of us who have unlimited internet though.

I have T-mobile and use aim, It only comes off sms if you use the built in aim client. If you sign onto the web first and open up aim, then you will not be charged for sms unless you have the feature turned on that tells you when you get an im.( in other words, you can set it up so that if your done talking to someone and sign off the wireless web, it will send you an text to let you know someone just im'ed you )

I just keep this feature off, and put up an away msg. If this is making any sense lol, sorry not sure how else to put it.

Just that i use aim over the web so not to be charged per sms....

Yup. Sorry to say it, but she is indeed wrong. As far as the A630 on T-Mobile, AIM messages deduct from your monthly free Text Message allowance. Furthermore, just the act of signing onto AIM uses up around 6 texts just to initiate the service.

If you plan on doing a good amount of instant messaging, you're better off opting for the $6.99 1000 Text Message plan. If you're an AIM addict, go for the $20 unlimited plan. I know, it's steep pricing, but we don't have much of a choice.
