Beware- seems crippled by Tmo

I picked up this phone from T-Mobile today, and signed up for the unlimited internet. The internet plan hasn't kicked in yet, but the good news is that it looks like you can use this phone as a bluetooth modem. This was my main worry about the phone- that they'd disable the BT serial.

Before I can tell for sure, though, I think I'll be sending it back. It turns out that they've disabled the Java App Loader- it doesn't seem like you can install *any* new software on the phone yourself. There's a "download games" option (which, right now, simply tells you Tmo has no software for this model yet). This will presumably get populated with games you can buy from Tmo for a few bucks. No thanks, I wanted to install the Reqwireless HTML brows...

You can get the Reqwireless browser on the phone. On their site it will give you an option to grab it from their wap site. Just surf in and it installs in just a few minutes. i ams using "web viewer" right now on my A630. Good luck...

what is the differnece between the Reqwireless web viewer and the ReqwirelessWeb? I have the A630, and haven't been impressed so far. I can't access any web pages through my Tmobile Internet plan. What would you suggest?

Reqwireless is the company. You can download the source code as well. What you want is called "Web Viewer". That is an HTML browser for Java enabled phones. You can't get regular sites through the T-mobile internet plan, only WAP sites which suck. With Web Viewer you can put in a regular url and it will reformat the page to your screen size. I have had it for about a week and it works pretty well. I have been using the demo but I plan on paying for the full thing when the demo runs out.

So would you suggest I cut off the plan, and try Reqwireless? Or should I just return the phone? I would really like the full ability to browse and view the web. What phone would anyone suggest? Please help, I only have about a week to return the phone. Thanks in advance.

According to phetus, you ought to be able to download the Reqwireless browser via WAP. Just go to their site with your computer and make like you're trying to install the trial version- you'll see the address to use for a WAP install. Then use that WAP address from the built-in browser.

After installing, it should be in with all the games as a new menu item.

You might need the internet plan ($20/mo) to make the browser actually work- I'm not sure if the "t-zone" plan (which is $5/mo or so) will suffice. The worst that'll happen is that it won't work. The data plans are non-contract options- if you get one turned on, then decide not to keep it, you can cancel whenever- you don't have to sit out a year or pay a cancellation fee.

Interesting... I returned it before they managed to turn data service on for my plan, but this really doesn't make any sense- they turned off the ability to install apps from your computer, but they allow OTA third-party installs? The pessimist in me says this was merely an oversight, and they'll clamp down harder with the next model.

As a programmer, this is still unacceptable to me. In order to install a program I wrote, I'd need to host it somewhere so I could do an OTA install? Madness. I could see how this wouldn't be so annoying to most folks, though.

My T720 was the same way. If you go to howardforums.com and search their motorola section, you can find a tool called PST that can enable app loading
