REPLACING NETWORK NAME

I was wondering if theres anyway to customize the name that appears at the top of the screen on my v400. I'm in Canada and on the Fido network, and it always says "Fido" on the top of my phones screen right above the date. I would imagine that it would say Cingular or whatever network your using; anyways i was just wondering if theres anything that can be done software wise to change that. I have the USB cable and software working fine, and have been able to customize everything else, just wondering if I can customize this too. Thanks.

There are a couple of things you could do there, but neither is easy.
If you flexed your phone with V600 flexware it would keep track of whose tower you're on (ex. you're with Cingular service but currently on a T-Mobile tower, it shows as roaming with T-Mobile as the name). Normal V400 flexware only shows your main service provider's name.
If you wanted customized text (such as your name) you could do that by editing some Seem files on your phone which would be less troublesome, but something you would need to be very careful with.

Both of those possibilities take a bit of work though.

I don't remember having seen a V500 flex anywhere. But if you're flexing, why not use the V600 flexware? It works flawlessly and the things not supported by the V400 (bluetooth and external LCD color) just don't do anything at all if you try to use them.
I've been using the V600 OEM flexware for a few months now and I love it. It's not something I'd recommend most people do, simply because it takes the right software and flex file along with having to set your phone back up again since all your data which isn't stored on your SIM card will be wiped out.

thanks brett... my phone is not acting up, its just that i would like to get rid of the cingular stuff thats on there. i hate it, it takes up valuable storage that i can use to put more mp3 ringtones on there. rite now, i have p2k and MPT already downloaded, wat else would I need to flex it to v600? so that i can have it downloaded and if I ever get royally annoyed by the cingular crap, i can flex to v600. thanks again.

You need PST software to flex, and the flexware file. You should be able to get both here:

By the way, the guy mentions reduced idle time battery life, but I must say I noticed no such thing on my V400 after the V600 flex.

Hmm, I may have spoken a bit prematurely there. Apparently you can only blank out the provider text rather than replace it with your own, and even that is reported not to work for the Fido network for some reason (see link below).

The external LCD text where it normally shows the provider can be customized with your own text though, as can the date shown on the inner LCD below your provider name:
