If I flex a V400 up to a V600, will I be able to engage my speakerphone before the call connects? Can I change my phone's external display to display text other than the time?

I do know one of the questions, with a v400 and a data cable you can change the external display doesn't need to be flashed to v600

Nope, unfortunately the V600 flex has the same issue where you can't switch to speakerphone until the call connects. I believe that's a univeral issue with Vxxx phones.
As far as I know you can't change the outer display of the time to something else.
However, like kipswholesale said, you can change the external display text (though only the text displayed when your phone is flipped open, not the time displayed when it's closed) by hacking a few files on your phone using a data cable.
This is the best site I've found with info on editing files on your phone, and has info on changing the outer LCD text:

Just FYI though, the V600 OEM flex which I'm using changed the outer LCD text from "Cingular" to "Motorola" w...

I guess the V551 / V547 / V555 will be the first Vxxx to have the ability to have the speakerphone on before the call connects. Do you think I will be able to flex to the V551 / V547 / V555 and get this ability?

I would venture to say if it's a software type feature that allows the enabling of the speakerphone, then it would probably work. But, if there's anything different in the actual hardware that enables this feature then we might still be out-of-luck!

You probably will be able to, assuming you can find a flex for one of those available for download.
It's possible the hardware differences would cause an incompatibility, but that's one good thing about the way Motorola has seperate flexware and firmware. The hardware communication is pretty much handled by the firmware, where the flexware is just the software layer over it.
There will probably just be issues similar to using a V600 flex on a V400. Namely, extra software options for hardware which your phone doesn't have such as bluetooth or multiple color backlights on the external LCD.

I guess we'll see.
