Reception

007

Oct 1, 2004, 4:54 PM
I am in the DC metropoplitan area and have consistently had reception problems with this phone. Previous phones (with other carriers) did not produce the consistent drop of calls beyond a certain amount of time. Cannot tell if it is the phone or the carrier. I can be sitting in the same location (not moving in a car) and the call is dropped. This is not a one time occurrence. Any others experiencing similar reception difficulties?

I only experience dropped calls when I'm on the phone with somebody who is also on their cell phone. So, I can never tell if it's their phone/provider or mine. But it doesn't seem to happen all that much to me.

Mine rarely drop calls, and only in a very poor reception area (unfortunately, where I work is such a place). One thing to remember, with this phone being on the newer GSM network you will have worse reception than you had with an older TDMA phone. The 2 networks are incompatible, so phone companies are still in the process of adding towers everywhere for GSM. Since TDMA has been around a good many years, the coverage is better for it currently.
So, though GSM is newer and better in every other way, you'll still have worse reception than an older phone until they add enough GSM coverage to match TDMA.

Another thing you might consider to improve your reception and reduce dropped calls is to get an extendable antenna; there are plenty on e...

Thanks for the link. I will give it a try. I have heard that they are improving the GSM reception, which hopefully will improve the dropped calls. Sounds like it is in the system as opposed to the phone.

Yep, when switching phones to one which uses GSM people with poor reception in many areas naturally tend to assume it's just their phone's fault, but in almost every case it's just due to the GSM network still being fleshed out.

I spoke to my carrier about this reception problem. He said it sounded like I needed a software update. So, he did his thing at the computer and I simply turned my phone off for five minutes and then back on. What an amazing difference. I broke my dropped call record of 11 minutes on the very next phone call. May be using more minutes now!

Cool, thanks for passing on that info. So he updated the software on your phone and it improved reception, or did he just update something on his system?
If he updated your phone, could you give me some info? What software versions are you currently running on? You can find those out by going to Settings->Phone Status->Other Information. There you'll find the Flex version, Software version, and DSP Software version.

Great. Now I am having the 11 minute call drop problem on my V400 that 007 had. I was just on a 45 minute call that, almost to the second, dropped the call every 11 minutes! The reception in my area is very good. What is going on?

11 Minutes? Mine would drop at 10 for the longest time, then recently at 13. I did a warranty exchange and so far, so good. Hopefully this'll last a year and a half until I can upgrade.

The update was made at his computer--60 miles from my home where I placed the call to him. It was like a download to my phone as I undertand it.

The flex version is GS9V400CIN02NA11C

The S/W Version is Triplets-G_08.09.2FR

The DSP S/W version is 62D5C500

You may also want to contact the rep where you purchased your phone for him/her to update your alpha tags.
