K10 Royale is crippled

by Maniac42    Oct 12, 2005, 11:46 PM

I received a Kyocera K10 Royale from Virgin Mobile USA in early August when I signed up for their pay-as-you-go service. One of the first things I noticed was the absence of a data cable jack. After receiving a couple of email non-responses to my questions about cables and Kyocera Desktop support, I just spoke to a customer service representative at Kyocera Wireless and finally got the straight story.

Virgin Mobile USA wanted their users to be forced to get ring tones and other downloads only via their service, and specifically asked Kyocera Wireless to modify the K10 Royale so that it does not support cable downloads/uploads from a PC. If one needs to be able to back up the contact list or download a ring tone, the representative said, one should choose the very similar generic Kyocera K9 model.

If rap and hip-hop are your style, you'll be happy with the K10's ring tones and the additional ones available from Virgin Mobile USA. Unfortunately, it's not my style, and I consider 95%+ of their offerings unsuitable or even in poor taste. Their selection of sound effects ring tones is very limited and generally of inferior quality. If I could prepare my own ring tones for the K10, I would select them based on audibility in noisy environments and would pre-process the audio data with dynamic volume compression and normalization before converting them to ring tone files. » »
