The V551 has major battery problems. And the 6230 gets and HOLDS much better signal than the v551. I have a coworker with the motorola and I have the 6230. We can stand next to each other and I will have better signal on my Nokia than he will on his v551.

Plus, the 6230 has more features.

I have owned both the v551 and the 6230. I'm currently carrying the v551 though. Both are high quality built and user friendly phones and are reasonably priced.

There are many more features, better build quality, and better reception on the 6230.

Personally I prefer flip phones, so the v551 won me over. But if any major issues were to develop with my v551, the Nokia 6230 is very close on my list.

I also prefer flip-phones and I Don't think the 6230 has any more features than the v551 except the Mp3 player and the Mp3 player might just make me get the 6230, but on the v551 u can only have ringtones that arent more than 30 seconds, they could be longer but with only 5mb of memory well..just not enoguh room. So does anybody have any onther opinions?

The biggest reason to get a bar bar(6230) over a good flip(V551) is size. Women have pocket books and size is usually not the big issue.

For men, the 6230 is thin for the pants pocket, but bar phone's screen and buttons get worn and scratched over time. If I didn't need the MP3 player function and thinner size I would have gotten the V551.

One big advantage the V551, and all motos have over nokias is customization/personalization. Moto allow you to assign phone features to a quick/shortcut/goto(whatever) key to about six of its scroll and nav keys. Nokia allows you to assign ONE. Too bad, this moto feature is a real timesaver for instant access to camera, voicememo, mp3, missed calls, etc, etc.

Note, I know Nokia has a Goto function that allow you to assign functions to a Goto List. This helps, but it takes one click to access the list, then scrolling to the function, then selecting the function. Moto allow one click access for up to six phone functions. The Nokia allows one.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the 6230, but I just wish someone would take the best of both and create a REAL USER FRIENDLY phone interface.

I just sent my v551 back and got a 6230 instead, and i'm much happier. I shouldn't have gone with motorola again after all my problems with the v90, but I wanted a flip phone and the v551 seemed to be pretty nice.

The speaker volume would cut out to inaudible levels, I'd drop calls like crazy, and it would say "unable to charge" 1/2 the time I'd try to charge it. I only had it for a few months, and after spending hours on the phone with Cingular, got them to exchange it for the Nokia. I should have just stuck with nokia in the first place.

I started with the 551. After 3 warranty exchanges I ended up with a Sony Ericcson s710a. I just sold it and got a 6230. The 6230 outperforms as far as reception is concerned. It is more reliable and has the mp3 (plus I can get a 1 gig chip instead of the 128mb with the sony). GO FOR THE 6230!!!

I just bought a 6230 and have used the Motorola triplets for over a year (have had a v600, v505, v551) and I can tell you hands-down the Nokia is a better phone. I get a better/stronger signal everywhere I go. Plus it has all of the features the v551 has and then some.
I don't think the Motos are bad phones and if you really have to have a flip, I would recommend them, but all things considered, I like the Nokia better.

I have always had a Nokia in the past. First the 8265 and then the 3595. Then I had a couple of Samsungs. Now i have the v551. I will have to say that I do like the Nokia's better, however that does not mean that I don't like my Motorola. That would be a lie. I have not owned the 6230, but I have compared one side by side with my v551 and the Nokia does seem to out perform the Motorola. I may end up getting the 6230 if I decide to change phones.

Definitely go for the 6230. Unless of course you'd prefer fashion over function.
