I had the exact same problem earlier this year. Your 6230 needs to be unlocked in order to work with a 3G SIM card. I only found that out by doing what you're doing - going to the forums because NOBODY in the hallowed halls of Cingular had a clue !!!

I used the Nokia unlock calculator at www.gsmliberty.net/shop/nokia_unlock.php, got an unlock code (which I never done before) - entered it - and to my absolute amazement I was back in business with my 6230 again !!!

I've tried upgrading to the Nokia 6126 and returned it. Then I upgraded to the Nokia N75 and returned IT! I STILL haven't found a replacement as good as my 6230 !
