Raw deal for Cingular and AT&T customers

As of today, you can get the Nokia 6230 phone for only $90 (after rebates) at Nokiausa.com and $70 at Amazon.com (after rebates) with only one year service commitment if you are switching over from another carrier. However, if you are an AT&T or Cingular customer, tough luck. The best deal you can get with one year service commitment is $199, even if you are currently not under contract.

The crazy thing is, I can terminate my service today, then get the 6230 from Amazon or Nokia ans start new service. I assume terminating my account, opening out a new account and potentially paying some kind of sales incentive to an online retailer will add up to a lot of cost for Cingular. For me, the pain factor is having to change my number.

It look...

My sentiments exactly. I just would rather not go through all of that. I agree that they put way to much into gaining more instead of worrying about customer retention.

Ok, see if you can understand this:

Cingular has many agreements with retailers to sell their products and services. These sellers are paid a commission and possibly residuals(portion of monthly bills). They do what they can to attract customers by offering equipment at very attractive prices.

If they take the time to design the ads, buy ad space, they need to know that the company is not going to undermine their attempts to attract customers and match prices. How would you feel if the company you were selling for was matching every ad you put out?

I work for Cingular retail stores and have sales associates that are very unhappy because they have to go against these same deals and can not compete. Customers who go the internet route...

No, I don't see what this has to do with customer retention. You lure new customers in, but do nothing spectacular the way you do for new customers, to try and keep the "true blue customers". The way I see it is kinda the way corporate will have a tendency to do. College graduates can come in new and make the same salary that a 3 year person can. This 3 year person has proven themselves put is not being rewarded for it. I have been with Cingular for nine years but the newbies get better deals than I do.

In corporate, the zig-zig effect on positions usually works. Which is what this industry is pushing us "true and blue" to do.

If you are a valued customer with an extended tenure at Cingular and want something above and beyond the norm, your request would not be thrown to the wayside. Esp if it means you might cancel. Retention is important at Cingular.

Please remember, sugar is much more appealing than vinegar to most.

Yes, you are right about the sugar. 😉 And I really don't want anything special. It is just that the newbies get everything, right off the back. And sometimes it would be nice if we could. I am overdue for a phone and like the 6230 but I still need to wait for the price to come down. It is at 149.00 and all I need is for it to come down another 50.00 😉 . I can wait, as long as another Nokia doesn't come out.

Thanks for being sensible. Alot of your coworkers are pretty hotheaded, and it would be my luck that I would get one of them it I did ask for anything, the smallest thing.

Thanks again.

Let's look at my situation:
- I have been a customer for more than 6 years
- I have always paid my bills on time
- I am not on one of the minimal minutes kind of plans. I pay about $140/month to Cingular for my two lines.
- I am not under contract on either of the lines I have. My contracts ended more than a year ago.

Based on this, I assume that I should be "a valued customer with extended tenure". Yet, Cingular is not willing to give me any kind of deal on a new 6230 so that I can replace my aging phones.

Now let's look at comparisons:
1. I can sign up as a new customer and get a 6230 for less than $70 from Amazon.com with only one year service commitment. This is a pain for me since I have to change my number. This is also a p...

i just had the same problem. we were using www.wirefly.com to get the phone (free plus a $25 gift certificate for sports authority). because switching from at&t to cingular is considered a migration and not a port, there is no way to do it online. this really put a crimp in our style, especially since our local store does not even carry the 6230 yet.

we ended up getting the sony ericcson t637 and having to suck it up.
