what is this speed equivalent to?
ISDN or better?
and in practicality, what might I expect from a data call connected to my laptop?

The NationalAccess service that you can receive through a teathered connection of your CDM-9900 will average about 64.4KBps with bursts up to 300KBps. I use a teathered connection when I travel, and it's a-okay for minor browsing.

If you're a power-player (DSL, Cable), then you'll probably want to invest in a BroadbandAccess aircard or wait for the Broadband handsets to launch for 300KBps average bursting up to 1+MBps (I think it was this high)
