It was just approved by the FCC a few days ago. It'll be months before a sample can be evaluated by VZW and Samsung can then create a batch large enough to support its sale.
As for whether it'll be the best phone available at that time, who knows? It'll be the best for international travellers, since it'll work throughout much of the world; but it'll be less functional than a windows based smartphone for US based business consumers. This phone will likely be relatively expensive for personal consumers (a large part of the price will derive from the ability to roam internationally- something few customers will ever do).

Just noticed a gaping whole in the features of the phone. It doesn't support SMS while on a GSM network! What were they thinking?

they were thinking that in order for the phone to be using GSM, you'd have to be out of the US...

Which is fine. I visited England and Ireland last fall and rented a GSM SIMM for a phone I borrowed from a friend. Most of my usage was SMSing vs voice calls. SMS was so quick to use over there and cheaper since my friends were in other countries. SMS is huge over there and if you have GSM compatible phone that doesn't do SMS, the phone is really lacking.

This Italian web site claims the phone supports EMS/MMS, and also GPRS.

This is a big deal to me because I'd want a single phone not only for voice calls, but also for data. The site above lists availability in December for 600 Euros - pretty expensive.

Keep in mind this is the start of a completely new type of product. Baby steps grasshoppers... baby steps.

Although I'd have to agree. Of my calling plan i use maybe 1000 minutes a month TOTAL for voice and my text message usage is 4x that much. Hopefull they'll have an international phone w/ the capabilities of what their US network can support.

Yea... I think that this phone won't be released until they have a agreement to let Verizon roam on Europe GSM network with this phone and when that is done then they will allow for this phone to come out otherwise there is no point to releasing this phone.

Also yes it will be expensive b/c of the feature that it has GSM in it.

I don't think it will be expensive. Qualcomm has integrated GSM/GPRS into their CDMA2000 chipset. Therefore, the additional cost would be rather small (assuming the Samsung SCH-A790 uses the Qualcomm dual mode chipset)

Considering Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon Wireless, I don't think getting GSM roaming would be a problem...

I believe that Vodafone will want to sell this phone in Europe as well... Why would Vodafone pay roaming fees to a competitor in the USA when they can have their subscribers roam on Verizon & get 45% of the revenue flowing right into their own pocket? 😁
