Small user trial was done for this phone. One of the Best phones I've tested in all Catagories. Samsung covered everything a user could want with this phone and then some. Even though I don't travel oversees I'll be getting this phone when we release it.

VZWTech5,

How about some more details - perhaps a quick review?

You must have gotten a manual when you got the phone. Some specific questions:
1. is SMS really in CDMA mode only?
2. so also voice dialing and picture id?
3. what about a release date?

Thanks

Do you know if the phone supports text messaging on GSM networks overseas? People I know outside of the USA tell me that everyone uses text messaging because it's cheaper than making calls from their phones.

Yes you will be able to do SMS in CDMA and GSM modes. You will not be able to do MMS in GSM though. And GSM will NOT work here in the USA. It will only be available in Europe on the Vodafone network.

Will the phone, when in GSM mode, require a smart chip to work on Vodafone's network? And more importantly, may this chip be removed in order to use the phone on another's carrier's GSM network in Europe? Or will they lock it to Vodafone?

Yes the phone uses a SIM chip for roaming on Vodafone's network. I'm not sure about using another carrier's SIM card in the phone.

If VZW ties it to their International Roaming partner they use now (so Brit outfit, not sure the Vodophone connection if any) it will be a waste of money. You have to pony up a $300 deposit for the sim card no matter what your credit scores or history. They keep it, they don't pay interest on it, and that is all there is to that. You also end up with a Brit phone number, which isn't so bad but I think its a total ripoff to pay the $300 deposit. Time will tell.

To clear up what I said - they keep it as long as you use the service. I was told you get it back when you cancel but no interest.

What you must understand, is that it someone travels to Europe 10+ times a year, then the phone is worth every penny. It sucks to have to rent a phone and a temporary phone # that you have no clue is, and can only make outgoing calls only, with minimal service, no choice of phone, and end up having to give it back as soon as you finally understand how to use it.

Otherwise, the phone is not needed, unless you feel like showing off.

just one little correction: even with the old phones you could rent. You could make both outgoing and incoming phone calls with it. Your USA number gets forwarded to the rented phone. So people do NOT have to remember the weird phone number nor would u miss calls...otherwise if you couldnt, whats the point, right?

True, but the hassle of the new phone, and figuring it all out pissed me off to no end.

I was asking the same thing & the only assumtion I can come up with that makes any sense is that VZW wants to be the 1st to release the WORLD phone so they can use that to back up the fact that they have the largest, most reliable network. Plus Moto is having so many probs getting there phones thru testing. Who really knows though...
