The ones on eBay are overseas models, not US.

Yes, but with limited features. I.e. the dial out and answer the phone, as well as text messaging sometimes. The pictures, taking, work, but sending do not. Plus in Europe/Asia, they commonly use 1xEV-DO, because it is already implemented.

1xEVDO is the newer version of the 1xRTT. It is more or less defined at quicker downloads, and quicker text speeds on. Simply meaning the Get it Now would be faster, the intenet would load quicker, and the text messages will get to you faster.

All the features would not work because the phone is set up to use certain features with certain providers. If you set it up, then a lot of the features will not work becuase they are specific to that provider. Such as Get it Now and VZW. Or the pix messaging is specific to VZW, at least the airwaves they send them on. So these functions will not work. The functions that will, are the standard ones, such as dialing out, receiving calls, maybe text messaging, and switching GSM/CDMA.

Btw, I don't know any country in Europe acutally using EV-DO now. And even in Asia, only Korea and Japan has such tech currently (Even in Japan, only KDDI use EVDO, which is less than half market). So it may not be correct to say EVDO is "commonly" used in Europe/Asia.
And talk about A790, it's a major drawback - it's CDMA/GSM, not CDMA/GPRS. So like sportyross said, you won't have many features in GSM side, which are supported only by GPRS.

And what are those models ? It's very interesting what are the phones supporting both GSM and CDMA modes, especially here in Russia...

Right now i dont believe that you can get this phone at all. it is stil being tested. Its a quad mode...Yes I said quad mode phone. It will work in CDMA technology in the United States and in GSM technology through out the rest of the world. The first of its kind and hopefully coming to Verizon Wireless soon.

And what about Motorola A840 ? It is also a quad-mode phone. Is it available for Verizon or other carrier ? I will ask my friend in the United States to buy such phone for me.

Here in Russia we have both CDMA 800/1900 and GSM 900/1800 networks, so such phones could be very useful for us. But it seems they are still not manufactured ☹️

Are you sure there's oversea version of A790? My understanding is A790 is unlike other Samsung phones; it's built in US for Verizon only (for now). Is it possible to find this auction on eBay now?
