Actually funny you should mention it, I had a "Emergency calls only" message pop for the first time yesterday when trying to make a call. I was actually tempted to dial "911" just to see what would happen :0) IT WAS DUE TO LACK OF SIGNAL though. I know this because it is about the only spot in my area that I have constantly lost signal for the last several years with Cingular service. I've had 5 different phones lose signal at this spot.
You might want to try a new phone just to be sure but if you are new to cingular then my guess is that "Emergency calls only" means no GSM towers in those areas. If this bothers you than try a Nokia 6340i which uses TDMA & GSM towers, or switch to Verizon or Sprint since they use different cell towers altogether and may have more in your area...
