problem with network or phone...?

I bought the phone over memorial day weekend, and I've had no major problems with it other than occassionally I'm unable to make outgoing calls. A message will pop up after pressing send saying "Emergency calls only" or even "Network failed". It's not a problem to run over to Best Buy and have them give me a new phone, or is it not the phone at all and maybe the Cingular network? Any input would be much appreciated.

Not sure if it's your phone or not, but the "Emergency calls only" is displayed when there is no sim card installed. So either your sim card is going bad or the phone is having trouble reading your sim card or possibly a combination of both. If you've never had a problem with your sim card before (assuming you were already a cingular customer) then it's probably the phone's fault for not being able to read the sim card all the time. The "Network failed" I believe is the fault of the Cingular network itself. Probably just busy or something at the time.

Actually funny you should mention it, I had a "Emergency calls only" message pop for the first time yesterday when trying to make a call. I was actually tempted to dial "911" just to see what would happen :0) IT WAS DUE TO LACK OF SIGNAL though. I know this because it is about the only spot in my area that I have constantly lost signal for the last several years with Cingular service. I've had 5 different phones lose signal at this spot.

You might want to try a new phone just to be sure but if you are new to cingular then my guess is that "Emergency calls only" means no GSM towers in those areas. If this bothers you than try a Nokia 6340i which uses TDMA & GSM towers, or switch to Verizon or Sprint since they use different cell towers alt...

How odd. 5 minutes after my last reply to your post I went to make a call and I got the "Network failed" message on my phone. I had full tower signal, and immediately upon redialing the number it went through fine. First time that has ever happened to me with two weeks of using this phone. You jinxed me man!!!

About 5 days ago I picked up a p107. Since the start I've been having this same problem off and on. On the front display there would be a phone with a line through it and when I would try to make a call it would say "Emergency Calls Only." After speaking with a cust rep at Cingular, I was told this message normally shows up when there is a problem with the sim card. There first solution is to pull the battery out when the phone is on and don't replace it until at least 1 minute went by. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem and they therefore told me to take it back to Bestbuy and replace it.

If this problem is persistent and occurs in more than one area around town, you may want to take it back for an exchange.

Don't worry, it's not the phone, it's Cingular's crappy cell service! I always get that message because I have no signal. When you have no signal the emergence calls only will appear. So it's Cingular and not the phone.
