I can't state as far as the Samung Galaxy S III is concerned, although I would think they would require the mobile hotspot feature for the phone.
But I also have the Mytouch 4G and was using the mobile hotspot feature for about a year, and never was required to have the mobile hotspot feature, until about last month. T-Mo finally caught up with me using it and shut the mobile hotspot feature off on the phone. I'm suprised that you have been able to use it for so long without them requesting the mobile hotspot.
