That's what a high-end phone actually costs. That's not all that expensive. A 64GB iPhone 4S costs $849 US without a contract.
If you want it subsidized (with a 2-year contract, etc.) I'm afraid you're out of luck. No US carriers have announced plans to carry it directly (and I highly doubt that will change.)
