First off, don't feel like a moron. The functions, except for the easiest like dialing and receiving a call, are about as clear as mud. Besides, my wife was doing the same thing that you were. The best way to learn all the functions of this phone is to play with it, which I've been doing. Try figuring out bluetoothing a picture or ringtone to another bluetooth phone. Instead of the menu saying send file, you have to select copy (very wierd).
As to your question about the sim card, I don't know. Just dial 611 on your v505, go to support, put your phone on speaker phone and sit there for about ten minutes before someone answers. Ask them the question about the sim card, but in my opinion, you have about a 50% chance in getting the correct answer.
