It sounds like your phone may be defective, you do not have to subscribe to the voicedialing feature through att, that is an entirely different feature, mainly good for those who DO NOT have voicedialing built into their phone as a standard feature, as you do. I use the v505 and the voice dial w/ out the paid feature. I also work for att (now cingular) and KNOW that if your phone is built w/ the feature into it, you do NOT have to pay for the feature.
The steps you described taking are exactly correct, by pushing that you should be prompted to record and then re-record. It sounds like a faulty phone, BUT since you did get it from a dealer, not through att directly... Att can't help, as far as replacements or anything like that, you have to go to the point of sale, or the manufacturer directly.
