CDMA does not allow simultaneous data and voice.
Wi-Fi for data is one way around that, as both of you mentioned.
4G LTE technology does allow simultaneous voice and data, but that's not CDMA.

Yes, it does. SV-DO allows for simultaneous 1X voice and EV-DO data. But no evidence thus far indicates that the iPhone 4S chipset is SV-DO capable.
Additionally, IS-95B, a later protocol revision to the original cdmaOne standard, also supported simultaneous voice and data.
