AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile - GSM
In short, Verizon's service for cellular phone service is considered to be considerably better than Nextel in NYC.
Personal opinions will vary, but unless you have a particular need for the direct connect functionality of Nextel, you would be better served by any of the other carriers in NYC for cellular service.
My personal opinion of cellular service in NYC as of 10/04 would be (from best to worst): Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Cingular, Nextel.
