ZTE Avail / Merit

When I plug my ZTE Z990 into the usb port on this laptop, I cannot find the phone with the computer. When I go into device manager, the computer has added a generic usb storage device and also a samsung television set. Neither one of these items are listed as working properly in the device manager page.

How can I tell my laptop that only the generic storage device really exists and make the phone connect to the laptop?
