Samsung SPH-A620 / VGA1000

side buttons

On all the other phones that I used to have whether it be samsung or lg the side buttons always activated the light for the front screen. this one however does not. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? I hate to keep opening the clamshell especially at night when i just want the time.
