The ticker tape is miles different from a second full sized touch screen. It screams gimmick to me and I really doubt it will become the norm.

Android isn't going to update for this phone specifically. Consumer reports are bound to say, "DO NOT BUY!" due to the lack of common sense put into the phone. Dual screens is a novel idea, but it's not really about being gimmicky vs being reasonable in price, style, and battery life. So far this phone is ugly, probably pricey, and the battery life is bound to suffer.

Some gimicks work ... touch screen was considered a gimmick when it started making appearances in phones ... now it's the norm. Gimmicks are needed for ideas. Some work, some don't.
