I am an iphone user and in my opinion this is why the iphone blows the android away. Phone Standardizations
Android phones: Some have have a slide out keyboard, some don't
The G1's have a 5xx mhz processor while the new phones have 1xxx mhz processors.
Some have front facing camera's for video chat, some don't
Some android phones don't allow access to the android market.
Point: Yes the iphone increases in stats in every iteration as android phones do but without standardization of phone hardware it is very difficult to know whether an application you purchase will run good on your phone. It is very hard to develop a very good app when there are sooo many different platforms that need to be supported.
