Apple iPhone 4 (CDMA)
?Weak Signal Strength? 24.0 db from FCC filing. Are you kidding me?
I looked it up on the FCC database in the SAR report, as I always do for new phones, and i was horrified! 24db is awful for a CDMA phone, the only thing I've see worse are the Casio rugged phones that have terrible reception in weak areas.
I've been reading the FCC SAR reports for 10 years and found that real world coverage, dropped calls, missed calls, etc follow the conducted output power very closely. It has always helped me to choose phones with the best reception possible. So I guess I won't be getting an iPhone...

The FCC doesn't test them, it is up to the manufacturer to have the phones tested at labs that are certified by the FCC. Then they submit the test info and all info about the phone to the FCC for approval and to keep on file.
If they make changes to the phone, they have to get that part of it tested and approved again and will file additional documents with the FCC for any updates they do.
The redesign on the antenna was for the CDMA signal and frequencies, which will require a different antenna from a CDMA phone, as they use different frequency bands. I doubt there will be any changes before the phone is released in a few weeks, however, they may make changes later if there are a lot of signal problems with the phone.

I can't believe that they made changes to the phone, adapting to CDMA, without fixing the signal problem. I know they're greedy but not stupid. Not getting a good rating from Consumer Reports is a 'No-No'. Also, the software is a completely different version that the 4.2.2 that is supposed to be the VZW final version.

internal phone antennas usually have a negative gain, so if they have acheived a high positive gain with this wrap around antenna design, then it may be acceptable. However, I've never seen that, and knowing all of the problems with this antenna design in the GSM version, it's hard to feel good about it... you would think Verizon would approve a phone with weak reception, as it makes the network look bad, however, I've seen many phones like that from several different manufacturers, and they keep approving them.

Well/ the SAR rating doesn't really relate to the db transmit power of the phone, SAR is how much energy you absorb by using the device, which depends on the antenna placement, construction of the device, etc, i have seen weak phones with high (bad) sar ratings, just because they put the antenna by your ear & didn't sheield it, but the phone still had weak reception, if you click on the FCC id from the phonescoop page for any phone, look for the Detail' report beside the most important frequency for your carrier, which would be 800mhz for verizon, since that is where most of the voice calls are, then select SAR report from the list of documents, and sift through the report for Conducted power, i usually check channel 384, as that is the firs...
