Acually, I work for Verizon as well.
The ability to use data while making a call is enabled by the 4G network. If you are not in a 4G area, it will not work. If you do pick up a 4G signal as they are continuing to develoop in 3G areas, the ability to use data while on the phone is weak and should not be relied on.
While Verizon has more 4G markets than any other carrier, including airports in major cities, it is not everywhere. I am lucky enough to live in a 4G market, anywhere else it's sold customers should not expect to use both functions simultaneously.
