V810 Review Followup

Since my initial review I have had additional time to use the phone and have noticed several CONS this phone does possess.

-Camera
The only way to access the camera functions is via a side button. There is no way to use the camera thru the phone's own menu. This is a serious design flaw since the external buttons are more likely to be damaged thru use and if that occurs you will not be able to use the camera at all.

-Internal Display
Having the ability to use photos for the wallpaper is of course a must with a camera phone however this Motorola phone like others has the Time/Date stamp on the screen. A serious problem though is that even through phone settings you cannot not remove the stamp. So all your wallpaper has a large time & ...

Let me say I appreciate your review.

Let me add that this is a strange and highly misplaced concern.

"This is a serious design flaw since the external buttons are more likely to be damaged thru use and if that occurs you will not be able to use the camera at all."

If the buttons fail, the phone is broken. Period.

My point was that unlike other camera phones, this particular phone can only access the camera feature thru the external button. You shouldn't need to worry about being in warranty or covered under insurance.

I get your point.

On my current phone, the Send key is the only way to start a new-number call. The End key is the only way to end a call using the headset.

These keys are every bit as "vulnerable" as the camera button, but are likely to be thousands of times more often.

Are these "defects?"

No, of course not.

It's silly to use your criterion as a negative.

RingTone,
Have you tested the 710? If you are waiting for the 710, I would imagine you have been following all of the hullabaloo both here and at howardforums. Are you willing to share your thoughts on that phone (maybe in a PM)?

I'm trying to decide which phone is next. So many issues and rumors of firmware updates, improved models, etc., etc., etc.,

An intellegent opinion would be great.

I had the 710 and replaced it with an 810. If you are more concerned about call quality, having volume loud enough to hear in a restaurant and size small enough to be unobtrusive in a pocket - the get the 810. To me, the 710 reminds me of the t720 when it first came out - lots a problems and no quick fixes by Motorola.

It seems like a lotta mixed reviews, but all I really want to know is-Does the v810 have a speakerphone? How's the clarity/volume, and can it be compared to any other phones?:8600,8900, se47. Any other input would be great.

Yes the V810 has a speakerphone, although it's a pain to learn how to turn on! 😛

As for volume & clarity the speakerphone function only amplifies the earpiece volume, so your conversation has that "tin drum" effect. It's about as loud as the 8900 but nowhere as crisp.

Aldcon,

You are still the only person on the planet who says the v810 will still be out for Verizon. A case a beer is waiting for you when it comes out, just let me know the brand. If not, you owe me.

I have played with the v810 at a US Cellular store. Just a great phone without all the bells and whistles. To those who think it should have mp3, Bluetooth, FlashCard, etc., are missing the whole point of this phone.

So, what is the expected date for release?

I have tried out a V710 model at a local Verizon dealer and found it to have some excellent qualities. When I receive our test model in a few weeks I will be more versed in all it's features.

The V810 is a nice little phone, I however am prefering to await the arrival of the V710. Mostly because I see the overall cost of the V810 to be more than the features you get. If I was a new customer and eligible for a discount the V810 is of course a better than average choice.

The V710 has three features that makes it the best buy. First, it has a megapixel camera with a video function. Second the phone has an expansion slot for a memory card, allowing easy transfer of MP3 ringtones & photos. Thirdly the phone has integrated bluetooth which is...

Also with a blue tooth adapter in my computer I can import and export photos, contacts, scheduling & other files with ease..

Got news for you, can't do any of these with the VZW version of the 710. VZW disabled them. BT is effectively DOA except for a car kit and wireless headset and speaker. Hopefully, USCC will be more enlightned than VZW.

The data feature service for USCC is different than that of Verizon. So hopefully it will not be disabled. But I am only a little person and don't have a say in the decision. I'll just cross my fingers. 😉
