-Battery life is directly tied to how much you use Motorola's Blur alternatives to other apps. For example, if you sync facebook/twitter through motoblur instead of installing the app, you're killing you battery SIGNIFIGANTLY faster. My brother switched from Blur to the native facebook app and he added an extra 6 hours of standby to his device.
The native facebook app defaults to checking something like every 2 hours. the Blur app checks at least every 15 minutes, and I think it polls faster than that, based on my wife's experiences with her Devour. However, in both cases, those times can be changed in the application settings. Turning up the Facebook polling in the native app will yield similar results to the blur app, and turning down the polling frequency in the blur app will result in closer to native app. It mostly depends how real-time you want/need.
The one thing my wife misses the most about Blur, that nobody has yet managed (wanted?) to replicate is a single timeline feed view. If you like that, there *IS* no alternative.
