I am still rocking the OG Droid, but My brother has the Droid2.

-Battery life is directly tied to how much you use Motorola's Blur alternatives to other apps. For example, if you sync facebook/twitter through motoblur instead of installing the app, you're killing you battery SIGNIFIGANTLY faster. My brother switched from Blur to the native facebook app and he added an extra 6 hours of standby to his device.

-I'll have to keep an eye on his phone about the lag, thanks for the heads up.

And if you have a D1, and you're comfortable with Rooting, CM6+Incognito Red Theme makes your device FLY and battery is amazing too since it's largely a black and white theme.

Most of the Fried D1's I've seen/read about are people who tweaked their phones and then installed the OTA. Those running it rooted (or those who always stayed stock) seem to be running fine.
