what if i use a mac? can i still update my software on a droid style phone?

The software generally updates over the air, so it isn't dependent on your choice of computer at all.

Most android phones are capable of presenting themselves as generic USB memory, for pushing of non-over-the-air updates, ringtones, music, etc.

Never used it myself, but a program called DoubleTwist is supposed to be pretty effective at helping you move your itunes collection onto the droid, and there's a Mac version.

Not sure if the development debugging tools are usable (adb), but those are mostly only needed if you are writing programs; and the development kit is based on Eclipse, which IS available for Macs. And again, I'd stress that this isn't relevant for at least 90% of the consumer market, and likely an even higher percent...
