Issue with Car Dock for Droid X

I bought the car mount on Thursday at the same time I got the phone. It's a nice accessory and I'm sure it would be quite useful, but I returned mine. Here's why:
The phone didn't fit in it correctly with a case on the phone. The car dock does have an insert that you slide out if you have a case on your phone. It's supposed to make the space bigger to accommodate the extra thickness. It wasn't enough extra space. The phone still did not fit. I could force it to come pretty close, but it was still in kind of crooked. The case I have is a really thin semi-hard silicone case that I got from Verizon. It's so thin that my friends (who were holding the phone) had to look twice to even notice that it had a case on it. I don't want to have to...

The car dock for the OG Droid doesn't even have any accommodation for a case. So the fact that there is at least SOME accommodation seems a good thing. I suspect, however, that it is designed to allow attaching a specific type of case, more than likely, something also manufactured by motorola, like the X and the car dock, rather than some generic thing.

It doesn't surprise me that it doesn't come with a car charger, most car docks anymore do not; and with more phones going to the USB charger interface, the likelihood is greatly increased that you will already have a suitable charger; so including the charger is an increased expense for little to no value.

Not sure why it would come with the 3.5MM cable, unless it somehow blocks the ...

It doesn't block the 3.5mm port. They just give you the cable so you can connect the X to your stereo.

The funny thing about the case/dock problem is that the case I have was the one Verizon had at the store specifically for the Droid X. It fits it perfect and it's really thin. Oh well. Maybe someone else will have better luck with it. Mine didn't fit right.

My point is that they generally have more than one case for any given phone, at any given time.

There's almost certainly a specific case the car dock is designed to work with. If the sales rep didn't know which one is which, or if they were out of stock (in which case one would hope they would have told you...) then that's a whole different story, but if that is the case, it has been less than 30 days, they might take it back and give you the right one.

I've already returned it. I needed a car charger anyway so I just exchanged it.

I found a car mount from arkon that fits the Droid X with a case, it's called the Mega Grip:

they have alot of different mount styles. If you need to charge it you can just use your car charger or get their powered cig lighter mount.
