The 16gb of built in storage on the captivate comes by way of an sd card that can't be removed. Is this common for manufactures?

you can't remove it, but you can un-mount it.

never heard of any other phones doing this, and i work in the biz.

This is becoming the new standard. It keeps cost way down and problems down too. Being able to unmount and format is a huge bonus. The BB Torch does this with their 4GB internal. It's also handy when you plug it in via USB. The internal shows as a removable drive, as well as the external msd
