what ways can I customize this phone other than the basic functions that come on it?

My favorite customization application is called co0kie home tab. there are a number of ways to get it, but the best way to get the most up to date version is through www.xda-developers.com. search for the app, and find the download link on the bottom of the thread.
there are also a number of custom ROMs that you can install on the phone. be careful with these though because you can brick your phone loading these if you aren't careful.

I definitely agree about the Co0kie home tab. It's my favorite app so far. There is also an app for scanning bar codes on items that gives you comparison prices at local stores or Amazon.
The wallpaper app gives you over 1,000 different options for your screen which was pretty cool as well.
XDA developers also has android systems that you can set up on your HD2 but it will take a bit of playing with to get them functioning well.
