Outbox Question

I sent a fairly long text message out today to a T Mobile user with an old phone. The icon in my outbox shows an envolope with an arrow pointing away from it. Does this mean that the message never made it? When I text message t oanother verizon phone I get a hand holding the message in the outbox.

I should add that the person was able to send me a text message the other day.
