the phone is good, but there is one MAJOR flaw..the phone keeps a permanent history of every thing done on the phone, like calls, txts, emails, and this action is not deleteable...i checked other forums, and called moto...i can't believe this...

permanent history? i used one to demo for a customer yesterday in my store. once i was done using it (made a few calls, sent a text or two) i did a complete wipe. nothing was left on the phone after that.

and i've sinced purchased the phone. i've sent easily over 300 texts and deleted the ones i didn't need afterwards. i've not seen any history of them or anything like that.

so i'm not exactly sure what you are referring too. i've deleted plenty of things. and done a complete factory wipe on the device.

i can delete call logs, txts, and emails....but if you click on contacts, you'll see a tab "history" "a-z" "status" if you click "history" you'll see everything you did during the day....and if you click on the menu button, and hit delete, it will delete the whole contact from existance..the only way to permantely delete history is to do a factory reset on teh phone...but why would anyone want to do that all the time?

MotoBlur is a feature that is available for this device. Basically, when the device is registered (at time of activation) to your account, as well as through Motorola's website, the device works as a records file of personal data from Contact information (phone numbers, addresses, etc), to text messages 😁 . As a contact updates their information through say Facebook, for example, the device registers that there is new information & updates it BY ITS SELF. ( 😎 !) It has GPS capabilities, which includes, phone location tracking in case device is 'lost/stole'. (that's my understanding).

You purchase the Backfliip? You actually paid money for a phone that has a deformed wrong facing keyboard? You do know that ATT is getting 4 more Android phones in the first half of this year, right?

Yes, but i like the design. It allows for a larger keypad to have the hinge in the back, provides for the touch pad on back, and gives a person the option to slef face the camera and still see the screen. Nice design, nice phone. And, none of the other Androids will have Motoblur. Why wait. I have been waiting for 3 years for this phone to come out with AT&T, and I love it!

Why am I being attacked for thinking that wireless carriers go way, way, way beyond their boundaries?!!!?

Wireless carriers ONLY job SHOULD be putting up cell towers and making sure the paying customer has a SIGNAL. NOTHING more NOTHING less! I'm just really sick of wireless companies doing things they shouldn't be. We don't buy tvs from cable companies, we shouldn't be buying PHONES from wireless companies. A wireless company doesn't NEED *MY* IMEI #, just like the cable company doesn't NEED the serial # to *MY* HDTV!!!

I don't need software from ATT on *MY* cellphone, ATT doesn't need *MY* IMEI #. And I don't need to buy a cellphone from ATT.

A radio signal is ALL I need from ATT.

a radio signal? thats it?

ok well then tell me how well your phone works without the AT&T sim card.

i mean, they would provide that right? where else could you possibly get that from?

and the entire IMEI thing...I guess if you own a blackberry and don't give AT&T your IMEI then how would they know what data plan to apply? you could put an iPhone data plan on there however you won't have access to BIS. Then what is the point of having a blackberry?
IMEIs are also used for warranty purposes. AT&T can see when the IMEI was first used and figure out if it would be covered under the one year manufacturers warranty.

or i guess you could just not worry about that and call up samsung or nokia or rim when you have a defective device. ...

I've been using unlocked/unbranded handsets for over 4yrs. Originally the reason was I had higher standards than Cingular/ATT. If your going to have a phone with a camera it might as well be a real camera not some pin hole lens, also, if a phone is going to be a music phone it should have a 3.5 jack, those 2 things are mostly what led me to buying the Nokia N95-3. It has a real camera compared to most phones, a 3.5 jack + stereo speakers, back in Dec of 07 there was nothing that compared to the N95's hardware. In time I eventually became fond of the Symbian S60 OS, very, very resourceful & customizable. ATT refuses to carry high end NSeries Nokia's. And yes quite a few of them do have ATT 3G. Nokia E75, N97 both have ATT 3G.
So I have been ...

First of all, I much like you, use an unlocked Nokia handset, and it works great for me, but for others unlocked devices may not be the best option. Also, none of Nokia's unlocked handsets have AT&T 3G, they simply have the ability to pick up the frequency that AT&T transmits their 3G service on, and the sim card tells the phone what to search for. And, every time you put your sim card in a device and it registers with the network it sends your IMEI to AT&T, so I am sorry to ruin your dream of "rebellion", but they have had your IMEI and known what device you were running all along. The best part of this is that they are okay with you running your unlocked device on their network. It makes you the perfect customer! They have no investment in...

I don't understand what you mean by unlocked Nokia's not having ATT 3G but having the right frequencies to recieve ATTs 3G. Any phone that has 850/1900 WCDMA has ATT 3G.

Secondly, reguardless of how long I stay with ATT, I just like the feeling of being a *free* consumer.

And I really don't think protecting an investment in a phone is the only reason carriers like a customer being under contract.
I really do think carriers like customers being under contract because they are AFRAID of the customer leaving to a competitor.

Actually, protecting an investment is the only reason carriers like a customer being under contract. Take T-Mobile for example. They have 2 options for non-prepaid accounts. The first is a 2 year contract in which you get a free phone (contract to protect their investment), or you can buy your phone right out, and have the same "post-paid" service with no contract. With this option, you can even put the phone on a payment plan. They just don't want to give away the phone without making sure you will stay long enough to make it worth it.

Problem is Tmo will extend a contract if someone wants to make a change to their rate plan. That's wrong! And Tmo is the ONLY carrier left that does it.

Contracts are for equipment upgrades, not rate plan changes.

I have T-Mobile, had a 2 year contract that was to be up March 12, 2010. That's when they came out with the cheaper rate plans, around the middle of Feb. They changed my plan for me, got the cheaper rate, and my contract has still already ended and I am now on the "no contract" plan with them cuz i didn't need another free phone (I like my touch pro 2)

So have you been keeping up on the headlines on Windows Phone Series 7 recently? Microsoft is going out of it's way to say it sucks!

Oh yeah, and about my IMEI. My understanding is if it isn't a handset that's carried by ATT then the IMEI isn't in their system. All ATT can tell is that I'm using a Nokia handset, that's it, they don't know it's the N95-3.

Yes, any phone that can receive WCDMA in the 850/1900 mhz band and is unlocked has the ability too utilize AT&T's 3G service, but that doesn't mean it will "Have" AT&T's 3G service. It will still require an AT&T sim card and service. Got my point now? 🙄 That's great, I am glad you feel free, when I want to feel free I just don't wear any pants. 😉 Do you know the term "churn" in reference to wireless carriers? It describes the percentage of customers switching wireless providers. Now when we look at each wireless carrier in the U.S. market place today, how many of them have networks with 100% compatibility between each other? Sprint and Verizon? Hmmm close, but not 100%, especially after the WMAX/LTE transitions take place. AT&T a...

The first 8 Digits of your IMEI indicates your manufacturer and model number (its the Type Allocation Code or 'TAC'). The only reason they might not know exactly what phone you have is they haven't entered that TAC in their systems. If they get serious about tailoring specific plans to specific phones, it will just be a matter of entering in the models they don't sell directly.

I work for AT&T and yes, if we put an imei in our system, it will come up with the make/model of the phone. The only difference between a phone we sell, and one we don't is that if we didn't sell it, we get the make/model but not the purchase info (date sold, or first use date) so we can't do warranty on it. But if we did sell it, that info is in the system. But we have all of the "first 8 digits" stored so we can pull up all the unlocked phones to to make sure everything is set correctly on the account.
