I'm considering getting an unlockek version of this phone for my daughter. She does not have a data plan and I'm thinking if Motoblur is contantly updating I'm gonna have an issue with costs. Does anyone know if you can chose to not use the MotoBlur option?

If you are on AT&T and get a smartphone (not just the Backflip) you will have to sign up for a data plan.

MotoBlur is an integral part of the phone's OS. Some people have botched the MotoBlur sign-up by not being in a 3G area when they initially setup the phone. This denies them access to many of the MotoBlur functions. But I don't know if if there is any way to make sure you bypass the MotoBlur setup.

The smartphone data plan is $30/month. You can get a feature phone and sign up for the unlimited family texting plan to cover all of the phones on your account ($30/mo) and then get unlimited data for $10/month.

Thanks for answering my question. I was afraid there might not be a way to bypass. I'm also going to go talk to them and see what they say, but figured I would get an honest answer here. I'm also gonna see about the $1o unlimited data, since we curently have the $30 unlimited texting.

By the way you do not have to have any data plan with AT&T if you have an unlocked smartphone. I have a Nokia e71 and do not have a data plan. I just use Wifi.
