Hi,
Would it be possible to purchase only the instrument from AT&T retail stores and then unlock it later to use on (say) a T-Mobile network? I currently have a T-Mobile SIM that I would be able to use. Thanks.

In order to purchase any phone from ATTW, you need to be a customer. If you can get some one with an account to purchase one for you, then yes you can get it unlocked and used on T Mobile. But that will be tough as the initial supply will be very limited and it might take a whole month to replenish.

Okay - I know of someone who is a customer. However, what happens to his service/existing cell if he purchases the instrument within his service agreement period? Does he lose all upgrade privileges? I know that AT&T offer a plan where they automatically upgrade your phone within a year or something.

If he is over one year in his plan, he can buy it at full retail without extending his plan. But he has to make sure that the IMEI is not put on the system for his service, which means that he has to call back and change it to what other phone he wants and this will cost an additional $30 for 2 changes made on the system.
