Manual Update to Android 2.1

Just in case you're still waiting for the OTA update to 2.1, here's a means of doing it early:

This IS the official OTA release, albeit downloadable as a ZIP file. I'm in the process of doing it right now, and it seems to be working just fine. If the process appears to freeze up at any particular point (namely when deleting files), then BE PATIENT. It should resume shortly. I've been hearing that the process takes anywhere from ten to twenty minutes.

couldn't stand to wait for the ota, followed the process as described yesterday. Worked perfectly. 2.1 takes the eris from a good device to an awesome device. Especially with skyfire: pinch zoom and double tap and text flow all work flawlessly. Unfortunately no luck with fennec. On a side note, the 2.1 update even worked to fix a customer's eris that had lost all network connection. That happened to my eris three times in the past and I had to master reset and lost everything. I'm keeping the update.zip file on my memory card just incase that ever happens to me again.
Anyone else have good/bad luck with the process?

When I clicked on the link and read the instructions it indicates that updating this way will "wipe" your phone. Is that true? I assume that means any data would be gone, correct?

Thanks

My contacts erased, but they came back after logging in to gmail. Same with Facebook. My apps were not erased. My T9 self input words stayed in memory. My homescreens reset to sense UI default but so far as I can tell that's really all that was impacted.

I didn't even notice my contacts missing, because I was in such awe that I was distracted by other things by the time that everything was synched back up. XD

By the way, you can view and edit your custom dictionary from the keyboard settings (by tapping on the gear icon on the keyboard). Very useful. Plus, it's hilarious to see how random my custom dictionary can be.

As for the home screens, I find myself using them differently as a result of the Sense UI enhancements in 2.1, so I didn't mind redoing my home screens. I'm more into widgets now, since I don't need to scroll through each screen individually anymore.

Before I did the 2.1 update I had my phone set so that when I held down the "1" key on my dial pad it dialed my VM and then automatically input my password. I can't figure out how to accomplish this setting again. I talked to two tech support guys at Vzn and they couldn't figure it out. Do you happen to know how to do that?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Settings > Call > Voicemail Settings (if you've already chosen your Voicemail Service above) > Voicemail Number, then change it to *86pp1111# (assuming that 1111 is your password). The p's are pauses. I recommend two in case you're in a bad service area. The # will confirm your password quicker.

Awesome, that worked. Tech support didn't tell me to choose my VM service first so the Voicemail settings were grayed out. Thanks a ton for the help.

No prob. Happy to help. Thing is, if an option isn't available, then you can usually make it active by activating something above it.

I've heard of that issue in which an Eris completely loses all network connections. I've never had it happen to mine, though. I love my Eris, and it's even better now that it's got Android 2.1 running on it.

It didn't delete my text messages. One thing strange though, I use the "People" icon all the time and it no longer has a search function for my contacts. That seems pretty strange to me. The update went great though.

Cool, I have never noticed that. I have always used the menu button to get to search. Thanks!!!

No prob. You can use it in most of the stock apps, if I'm not mistaken.
