its called Advanced Task Killer and u can get from marketplace or whatever googles app store is called.

there is no task manager on the device to close apps so alot of issues like slowness or freezing can be remedied, even battery life can be extended if u keep the number of running apps to a minimum.

also keep in mind pressing hold down the home key shows most recent used apps, it doesnt show what apps are currently running

I don't buy it. Given the way Android works, running multiple apps should not be a big drain on the device, unless the app is poorly developed. I would only recommend this app for Android developers, other users should not need it. For normal users, this is about as much snake oil as those Windows programs designed to free up memory so you don't have to upgrade, and can likely have the same consequences when messing with the system resources outside of what it does automatically. If you do not understand how a computer works under the hood, don't mess with it.

Even the VZW techs are recommending you install this very same app. They did to me, both in my local corp store, and when I called in to 611 to ask a question. I'm not sure why you consider this "snake oil" when it makes perfect sense that you eventually need to close out apps that you aren't using so as to free up system resources. This is not an example of "not understanding how a computer works under the hood", but actually a good example of understanding how it DOES work.

Yes HTC customer service recommended this app to me because they said this device will show you that you have "closed the app" but it is still actually running in the background. This is a bug that has to be worked out with the up and coming Droid's. I have done many things, including downloading this app, to conserve battery life. I can use it heavily now and it will last for more than a day. This app is a must!

If you read the SDK documentation you will find Android has a built in auto task killer.

There are two types of tasks in an application, an activity and a service. An activity is the part of an application that the user interacts with. A service runs in the background. Neither of these are required for an application. Not all apps will have a service, not all apps will have a user interface.

Activities do not run in the background. They only run in the foreground. When something comes in front of an activity, Android puts it in a stopped state and it becomes eligible for auto task killing (as in the built in function). It consumes no CPU resources, and only occupies memory. When an activity runs that requests more memory than is availa...

Once I found my troublesome app (Meebo IM) and removed it, my battery life significantly improved.

I had to elaborate in another thread about the no sleep issue, so I'll do it here too.

There are many apps that prevent sleep that don't necessarily need to be avoided. Many apps prevent sleep while running, such as games. There are many apps that prevent sleep with a background process that require it, but don't constantly run in the background, such as media players. Apps expected to run full time in the background should not prevent sleep, however.

On my Droid Eris, all of the standard apps behave properly and I get plenty of battery life. On the other hand, apps like MeeboIM drain the battery, causing 100% awake time. If you set it to start on boot (it's an option in the app), reboot your device, and once booted, hit the end key to...
