Battery Life

Hello Forum,

Has anyone else using this phone experienced less than stellar battery performance? Today I turned my phone on at 0800 and by 1530 it was in the yellow (very low). Sent one text, made maybe five calls, received three emails. I have my email setting to check download emails at five minute intervals (coming from a BB Storm1 w/5.0). Also a little disappointed to find out that the voice dial function did not support dialing initiated from a bluetooth headset. Any thoughts/suggestions on the battery life?

Thanks in advance...

I had a lot of trouble with the battery at first also, until I found this trick. Now I get a full days worth of battery no problem!

I copied this from another site for here.

"Indeed HTC is working on a fix for these issues, but here is what You can do to fix the application in the mean time.
I was getting 2 hours "Heavy" (texting, data, wifi, high brightness) use before.
I read somewhere that there it is a battery issue caused by the defaul HTC (or android, idk) application.
The work around is for sms to something other than the included app as the default action for text messaging.
This is accomplished installing another handcent sms or various other apps that you may find by going to the market and searching SMS.

Mine should be delivered tomorrow. I'll be sure to try what you posted to maximize my battery life, especially since I won't be able to keep my hands off of it tomorrow. XD

Wow! What a "fix" for the battery! That's a shame. I also found out that the voice dial app does not work like on a BB. No initiating a call from my bluetooth earpiece (everything had to be done from the screen). So much for hands free. Anyway, I took the phone back (hated to because I really loved the form factor) and got the Storm2 (I had the Storm1). Thanks for the reply on the "fix" though.

I have helped my battery life out by doing the following: Download an application from the marketplace called "App Killer" The Eris (even though you exit the program) keeps it running constantly in the background, thus using more battery life. Kill your apps after each use.
Next, reduce your screen brightness to approx 10%. Turn off background data that is under the tab "data synchronization." Set your email to be pushed once every 2 hours instead of every 15 minutes. I am able to get more than a full days use out of my phone now with these settings. Make sure you have not enabled the gps tracking, this keeps your phone running constantly.

I've downloaded handcent and set that as the default txt messenging program. I still get txt msgs. in the txt messenging program that came with the Eris, how do I stop that? I've also downloaded the advanced app killer and when I click on it after sending or receiving a txt msg using handcent, I see that the original txt messenging program is running. Any suggestions?

I've been looking for ways to extend battery life and actually wrote up some notes on my site about it. I'm getting a good amount of battery time, but it still seems lower than it should be for a device rated at 2 weeks standby time. I understand standby means lowest power state, but I should be able to get at least a couple of days with my usage.

I'm still playing with settings, apps, etc, to see what more I can get. I'll give that SMS trick a try to see what happens. I've already found the "Peep" app can run away with the CPU (I've had to kill it because it actually was causing my phone to run extremely slowly).

Supposedly Droid Eris has a newer firmware than the Hero. As far as I can tell, the SMS problem that was supposedly there before is not present on the Droid Eris. I saw no appreciable difference in awake time or battery usage between using the built in tool and a third party tool.

The best advice I can give is when you are installing your apps, pay attention to the warnings. If one of the warnings states "prevent phone from sleeping" you can assume this app will work the battery down quickly. Meebo is one such app that does this. It causes 100% awake time, when this is something that should be related to your actual usage. My testing today with no 100% awake time apps running resulted in 4% awake time and only 25% battery drain over 20 ho...

Where are these warnings you speak of?

They are shown when you hit the Install button before actually installing. They are only shown if the things they warn about apply, so not all apps show the warnings.

Also, mind you, I said I'd avoid no sleep apps that run in the background. I should elaborate on this. There are many apps that prevent sleep that don't run in the background, such as games, and there are apps with a background process that also prevent sleep that are actually useful, such as media players. Apps intended to run full time in the background should not prevent sleep with the background process.

In any case, it seems if you want an IM app that doesn't drain the battery, you end up with connection trouble. If you want an IM app that actually stays connected, i...
