PRL 50110 Bug - May want to wait before buying

I wrote a glowing review previously and still think it is a great phone, but there is an annoying software glitch potential buyer should be aware of.

As of PRL 50110, the front LCD flashes the word "Verizon" and the clock dissapears. "Verizon" will show for a few seconds, then pop off, then pop back on again. This is annoying if you rely on your front LCD to show you the time/date because you may have to sit and wait for the word "Verizon" to go away.

Hopefully this is something that will be correctable via software update.

While I wish the flashing "Verizon Wireless" banner weren't there, I do not think it's a software glitch. According to Verizon tech support it's the ERI (Enhanced Roaming Indicator) that's causing this. It tells you when you are and are not in a Verizon service area. It's meant to help you manage your home minutes better. Most phones only show this on the inside lcd, however Audiovox decided to put in on the outside lcd too.

I still think it's a great phone.

i agree with beekatt; it doesnt seem like this is a software bug, although it is pretty annoying. This is one of the very few things that I dont like about this phone, and even this is just a small annoyance 🙂

All ERI-capable phones show the proper roaming indicator when roaming and will show Verizon Wireless on the main screen, but I have seen no other phone that flashes "Verizon" on the outside LCD (which is the issue of this thread). VX-4400 doesn't, CDM-9500 doesn't, Kyoceras don't... not sure where you're getting that one. The 8600 software passes the ERI info to the front LCD.

you can temporarily turn if off:
1: menu
2: settings
3: system
4: nam settings
5: set ::auto NAM:: to yes

you have to set auto name to no and then back to yes next time u turn ur phone off... but i since i leave it on most of the time it works

Thank you very much for the posting on how to take the verizon banner off of the front of the phone. I really like this phone and that was the only drawback.

Another question I have is when you do this with the banner does it deplete your battery faster then normal. Please reply and let me know.

To change the banner flashing and just show the time on the outside LCD do the following:

1. Press the upper left soft key (ie the one with the "..." on it).
2. Press 6, 2, 2, 1
3. Press OK key, to edit Banner
4. Type in a banner (puts it on the inside LCD screen), up to 32 characters.
5. Press the OK key to save.

I did this 20 min ago and the time is there always. I even turned it off and back on and just the time appears, no VZW banner.
Now if someone could figure out how to get rid of the annoying turn on/off sound we'd have it made in the shade!
Cheers, MnM 😁

I just got this phone and also tried the idea MnMnIA suggested to change the banner flashing; with no results. ☚ī¸

First imressions- neat little phone; better that my ol' LG-510.
Nice to have a cool little phone with analog for the hill-ey SF bay area!
