Nicole, your device has a full duplex speaker phone system which enables you to converse with someone at the same time, as opposed to a half duplex design which requires one output at a time, resulting in a much clearer voice reception, namely because one participant cannot over ride the others' voice.

It sounds like your experiencing ambient noise. One way to diminish this is to speak more directly into your phone's microphone, limit the distance from the device, or try to wait until the other party is finished speaking. The best way to solve the problem is ask the caller if they are on their speaker phone and if so, to get off it. The noise factor should be resolved.
