Storm 2 or....

darthschrader

So thanks to my addiction to Blackberry, I stuck with the Storm this past year...though at times it was frustrating! Now there's a nice new OS for the Storm along with the release of the Storm 2. However, Verizon will also soon release Android, and now I'm torn! Do I stick with Blackberry and go with the Storm 2 or venture out into new territory with Android? What to do, what to do? I know Blackberry, but this new Android is looking pretty amazing! Is Blackberry in for some trouble?

Blackberry isn't in any sort of trouble. Even though RIM has gone way into the consumer mass market in the last couple of years, it still has business roots and there are lots of addicts out there that would be lost without one.

I still see these two devices as very different. If you are all business go Blackberry, if you are all fun so to speak go Droid. If you are in the middle thats where it becomes frustrating.

Try one out for 30 days!

Let's be honest Hawkeye...everyone needs to watch out for Google! They're trying to take over the world! 👀 đŸ¤Ŗ

But seriously, I really am torn here. I'm probably your perfect example of a middle of the road user. For those already using the Storm 2, how is it? Is it really worth the upgrade? Is it significantly better and faster than the original Storm? Speed has definitely been an issue with the Storm. I'll probably just have to wait until I can play with both of them side by side to make my final decision!

Speed is better, but I think that it has more to do with more memory at this point. OS 5.0 on Storm 1 is good too. More memory allows the OS to run smoother. I have...

I have used the BOLD and the 8900 Curve, both having Wi-Fi, and both having Wi-Fi connection issues that no other device I have used had. Are you stating the wi-fi bug has been addressed?

People on Crackberry were having all sorts of issues on the Storm2 with wifi for the first couple of days. This bug turned out to be a Verizon issue. People with $30 plans were not connecting and $45 ones were. BES was fine. That's been sorted out I believe.

What issues are you having? I am curious because I am new to wifi phones

The wi-fi just would not stay connected, even though I set it up according to instructions.

I realize it makes less of a difference when on EVDO, but having the BOLD and Curve 8900 almost always use EDGE, while my iPod touch kept a wi-fi signal was frustrating.

Now I understand, mine does disconnect from my network

If you really are a middle of the road type of guy. I say pick the one that has the most media features. Because most phones used for business is usually for the time they are away from the office. If your phone has say videos or an mp3 player the entertainment value will surpass the business use in my opinion but this is only if you are in the middle. Think about that one app that you need on the business side of your phone could you either do it on the laptop at home or come into work a few minutes earlier. If your answer is no to the last two statements then a more business oriented phone will work for you. Storm 2 seems like it should fit the build since it is an improvement over the original and being an early adopter can sometime lead ...

There is an interesting Utube on the current page of BlackberryOS.com comparing the Android to the Storm2. The browser improvement of WiFi over 3G is minute. The Android browser rocks over the Storm. If Email is important, stay right here.

Check it out......

I was in the same situation as you...torn between the storm 2 or droid. I've been a BB user for years now and love it. I love the trackball and BB messenger. I'm not a fan of touch screens because I text and email a lot for work and for personal use.

I'm at the point where I'm wanting more than just a work phone. The multi-media component is really growing on me. So I got the droid on Friday. So far so good. It's a completely different ball game. The camera on the Droid isn't as good as the BB and the battery life isn't as good either. BUT it's a cool phone. I like having the ability to customize it completely and they have a lot of apps. I remember when I loaded a lot of apps on my curve my phone kept freezing up. This is not the case wi...

I forgot to mention that I now wish the Droid did NOT have a keyboard because their touch screen keyboard is incredible, by far better than even the iPhone. It took me only a few hours to get used to the touch screen keyboard whereas other phones it took forever. I had an iPhone for 3 weeks and returned it cause the touchscreen was so annoying. On the Droid I love it and truly wish it didn't have the slider keyboard....it's not necessary to have one on this phone at all.

BTW - The only drawbacks I see with the Droid are the following:
1. No BB messenger
2. Bulky/heavy phone especially with a case on it
3. Poor battery life
4. Camera isn't great, which is very sad being that it's 5 megapixels
5. Not an international phone

Hope thi...

Thanks for the input! Several people in my office got the DROID and I already know other's who have used phones running Android with other carriers. I'm pretty set on the fact that I'll be picking up a DROID soon!

Take a look at the Droid Eris if you don't want the keyboard.

Battery life is a common complaint on a lot of smart phones. Seidio.com is a great place to get bigger batteries and you can always try things like turning off Bluetooth, WiFi, and adjusting screen brightness to a lower level

Lady Georgia...first you say you left BB and the Storm2 because you didn't like touch screens because you did a lot of texting - now you say you wish the Droid didn't have a keyboard because their touchscreen is incredible. Did you even give the S2 a chance? Its touch screen is also incredible and then you could have stayed with BB and all the things you liked about them. Having that positive feedback from the SurePress is great.

I've tried the storm 2 several times in the store and I really don't quite like surepress. I like the Droid because of the google maps and gps, which the storm 2 doesn't offer. If the storm 2 had google maps and gps I would get it. I hate the way Verizon locks everything on their phones. I refuse to use vz navigator and rhapsody when the Droid has it for free. The virtual keyboard on the droid is so good I don't miss a physical keyboard at all. The droid's physical keyboard is horrible. Do you have the storm 2? If so, what are your thoughts on it? I'm still within my 30 days to return....

Google Maps has been available forever for the Storm. I had that on my 9530 and now on my 9550.
The Storm was the first Verizon phone to have unlocked GPS capabilities also from day 1. It has since spread to every other new blackberry and is now showing up on most Verizon smartphones. It may be shipped out of the box with the feature turned off though.

Go to "options" then "advanced options" then GPS" and make sure the "location on" box is highlighted, enable location aiding and you are good to go.

My wife's phone is having problems with the keyboard not switching from portrait to landscape when texting? If so is there something to fix this, or is this common, doesn't always happen?

Thank you,

Robert

As a recovering Palm user, I was looking to make this same choice. Some of these responses really helped me feel secure that I made the right choice in going with the Storm 2 which should arrive tomorrow. I'm definitely a middle of the road (part business/part personal) user who relies heavily on e-mail and my calendar.

Thanks!

I hear ya. I was so used to charging every few days with my BB Curve and now with the Droid I'm charging 2-3 times per day. I can't even enjoy the phone when out of my house for fear I will not be able to charge it. So at this point I think I may need to return the droid and get the Storm 2.
