Had the same problem and found the answer in an Amazon customer review:
Hit the upper left button to bring you to the message screen (assuming you haven't changed your shortcuts. If you have something else assigned to that shortcut button, just hit menu and select messaging.)
Hit that same button again (now it's labeled on the screen as "settings")
Scroll down and select entry mode.
Select "Word" (short for T9 word).
And that is how to make T9 word the default entry mode on an LG Accolade from Verizon.
