Data Theethering

I was reading on the Evo forum that someone said he teethered his Hero to his computer to get it online. Does anyone know if it's possible to do it and if it is how and can it work on an X Box and or Wii?

With the Evo you use the hotspot feature (either by paying the $29.99/mo or rooting your phone and installing wireless tether). This works with the PS3 and Wii because it creates a simple wifi hotspot. Hero tethering is mostly by USB. It would require special software on a PS3 or Wii to allow tethering. To my knowledge there is no such software available so tethering wouldn't work.

Actually I did a little more research on the matter (since I'm getting the Hero tomorrow) and it appears that you may be able to create a hotspot Wifi signal after all. After I get mine I'll give it a try and let you know. I already did this on the Evo and it worked without having to pay the $29.99/mo charge. From what I've learned, the same can be done to Hero.

I did a bunch of google searches. From what I found, the same method used on the Evo *should* work on the Hero. I used unrEVOked to enable superuser and downloaded Wireless Tether (this was on the Evo). The same method is said to work on the Hero. I will post links after work (I'm firewalled here).

I rooted my phone this weekend and got wireless tether to work. Took awhile but so worth it. Trick is to downgrade your software cuz after sprint released 2.1 they also sent a software update that fixed the rooting exploit. I put on buufed 2.0b ROM and it includes overclocking (710mhz), apps2SD and the wireless tether app (not to mention the whole new look and icons).

Just make sure you backup your data! Make a Nandroid backup - backup your SD card on a computer (you have to partition it to save your apps on it). Make sure your phone has at *least* a 30% charge when downgrading the software (to enable exploit). After downgrading technically you can use the UnrEVOked to root your phone (I did it manually).

So just to make sure I have to have Android 1.5 to make it work or can it be done on 2.1?
...

It can be done on 2.1. There was a patch made to 2.1 by Sprint that closed the root exploit. The patch itself was a small quick download made to 2.1. If you look at your software version (settings - about) and it ends in 6, then you have the patch that prevents rooting (5 or below is good). In that case its a downgrade of the software. If you had to, going back to 1.5 would work too.

The only thing I'm worried about now would be if rooting my phone could cause problems later on. Is there any issues once you root a phone that can cause major problems?

No. Rooting your phone grants you full access to all your phone features. What you do with that access could 🤣

But again rooting doesn't damage your phone. Its like using a work computer that doesn't allow you into control panel. Rooting your phone would be the equivalent of logging into that computer as an administator (gaining full access including control panel).

Hope that clears it up for you. 🙂

Exactly! Don't forget the other cool things you will be able to do like overclocking your CPU (SetCPU), saving apps to SD card (App2SD), and a bunch of other apps that require SU access 😁

I can't wait to do this! I need a 32Gig memory card now. I wonder what all apps I will downlodad to save on there. I can still delete them after I download them right? Just making sure, dumb question I know. What is over clocking my cpu excatly?

Yes you can still delete them lol. They are still listed under applications with the option to move to SD card or internal memory or delete.

Overclocking your CPU makes your phone faster. Hero is set at 528mhz. I have mine overclocked to 710mhz (noticeable increase in speed). Some overclock further but doesn't work for everyone.

Does your phone have to be attatched to the computer to be faster or is it a perment setting? Can I set it to go back to the pervious speed or once I do it it is always there? I really need to see if I can't find some apps that I want to keep on my phone and move them to the SD card tonight. 😁

You can change it on the phone. Mine is set for 710mhz for when the phone needs it and underclocks when idle (to save battery).
